Introduction to Site Carpentry NVQ
Carpentry is one of the most practical vocations finding application in a diverse range of industries – construction included. It can also be an immensely satisfying job as one sees the work of their hands move from concept to completion. Carpentry is a practical craft where competence is primarily judged on how well one does their work. But hands-on skill alone does not suffice in today’s competitive job market.
Independent verification of your Site Carpentry skill will make you competitive in the work place. In the UK, the Site Carpentry NVQ is probably the most important credential for a site carpenter. The Site Carpentry NVQ Level 2 attests to your having the skills, knowledge and competence that is necessary to execute the carpentry role in the complex environment that is today’s construction site.
Getting a site carpenter NVQ also qualifies you to apply for a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card. It is today difficult to get access to and work at any major construction site without producing a CSCS card.
Technical assessment for the Site Carpentry NVQ
Before you can attain the Site Carpentry NVQ Level 2 you will be assessed on several areas both on Site Carpentry and on general best practice standards that must be adhered to at a modern construction site. On the Site Carpentry aspect, the assessor will evaluate whether you understand the components of structural carcassing and can erect the carcassing on site.
You will also be required to demonstrate hands on expertise with first and second fixing components. On this, evaluation will be on interpreting instructions around first and second fixing components and installation in accordance with appropriate legislation.
The Site Carpentry NVQ assessor will also check how efficiently you work vis a vis the time it takes you to complete a task and your use of available resources. You must show evidence of competence in the maintenance and management of non-structural carpentry and show that you can setup and use circular saws without a problem.
Non-technical assessment for the Site Carpentry NVQ
On the non-carpentry aspect, the Site Carpentry NVQ assessment will be centered on conformance to best practices on general safety at the construction site. Competence on general safety will cover your capability to identify and report hazards on site, adherence to workplace safety legislation and compliance with internal safety & emergency procedures. The entire assessment for the site carpenter NVQ Level 2 can be concluded in a day.
